Background:

Söhne, the “son” of  Akzidenz-grotesk—a legacy of bold design and Helvetica—used for modern signage. Inspired by the subways of NYC. A new take on an iconic wayfinding system, both Leicht (light) and Kräftig (strong), Söhne captures the charm of analogue type in a digital age. "A memory framed in reality," in the city that never sleeps. From Klim Type Foundry.

I created an animation and a corresponding spread to tell the story of Söhne from its initial conception to the construction of letterforms. Enter the mind of Kris Sowersby, and the world of Söhne.

Keyframes:

Spread:

Iterations of spreads exploring assets, typesetting, and various layouts. The final spread mimics the subway signage of NYC in form and uses a yellow reminiscent of the city transit system.

Storyboards:

I began with hand drawn storyboards to explore motion ideas, then recreated it in Illustrator and began creating assets. I used these frames to create a gif, visualizing the final result.
